What does MGO mean?
MGO stands for methylglyoxal and occurs in particularly high concentrations in Manuka honey. This compound forms during the natural maturation process, which for this honey takes about 18 months.
The nectar of the Manuka plant initially contains dihydroxyacetone, which converts into methylglyoxal during maturation. Why this compound is especially present in Manuka nectar is still not fully understood. A MGO level above 1000 is considered exceptionally high and makes this honey a particularly rare speciality from New Zealand.
Each batch is tested in independent laboratories both in New Zealand and in Germany, ensuring the highest quality and traceability.
