WHAT ARE APHTHAE?
A disease that occurs in the mouth.
It usually affects the lip, the tip of the tongue or the oral mucosa. Aphthae appear as milky yellowish patches surrounded by a reddish border.
The affected areas are painful and acidic foods, such as oranges, can cause a burning sensation. The disease usually occurs from the age of 20 and more frequently affects women. The cause is still unknown, but it is thought that aphthae could be a psychosomatic reaction of the body. People with high stress levels and a weak immune system are more prone to aphthae. They are often harmless, but are very painful as soon as the milky yellowish layer comes off - especially when brushing, chewing, drinking, swallowing or speaking.
Aphthae have a milky-white coating on the skin layer, with the edge often being reddened. They can burst open and damage the oral mucosa.
