What is gingivitis?
Inflammation of the gums (also known as gingivitis) is a chronic, non-contagious infection of the gums. The symptoms of gingivitis are reddened or swollen gums and increased bleeding of the gums. When brushing your teeth, contact with the gums can cause heavy bleeding. Initially, this does not cause any pain or other discomfort, which is why the inflammation often goes unnoticed for a long time. If this symptomatology intensifies, the visible and noticeable symptoms can cause a general feeling of discomfort.

What to do if you have gum problems?

A study from 2020 focused on the effectiveness of propolis in mouthwash against plaque and gingivitis. In the study, propolis showed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Nine randomized controlled trials with a total of 333 participants were conducted and evaluated for the results. Raw propolis was used in eight of the studies. Seven studies used 2 % chlorhexidine and two studies used 0.12 % chlorhexidine.
The results indicate that mouth rinses with propolis have benefits in reducing plaque and gingivitis. While the studies suggest a potential benefit of propolis-based mouthrinses for plaque and gingivitis, the results should be viewed with caution due to the very low-quality evidence currently available.
