Manuka honey: bedrop products with the liquid gold from New Zealand

Are you looking for a special superfood or skincare product that comes straight from the heart of nature? Then Manuka honey is the right choice for you.

At bedrop, we bring this exclusive natural product directly to your home from New Zealand in its purest form or as a valuable ingredient in our skincare products!

What is Manuka honey?

Why is it so different from conventional blossom honey? The answer lies in its origin. This special honey from New Zealand is extracted by honeybees from the nectar of the South Sea myrtle (Leptospermum scoparium), which is known locally as Manuka shrub .

The Original Manuka Honey is a natural product that comes exclusively from the manuka plant and impresses with its characteristic texture and tangy, spicy aroma.

Manuka honey and its specialty: why it is so highly valued

The true specialty of Manuka honey, however, lies in its valuable ingredients: the special ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO). ¹ This substance is produced by the natural conversion of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is contained in the nectar of the Manuka blossom.

At bedrop, it is very important to us that you know exactly what is in your jar of Manuka honey. That's why you will only find Manuka honey original with certified MGO values.

An MGOof 400+ or MGO 500+ is a clear sign of quality for genuine Manuka honey from New Zealand, which comes from the best beekeepers. The higher the MGO content in Manuka honey, the stronger its effect. ²

Frequently asked questions and further information

Real Manuka honey with MGO 400 or more is considered good for humans, animals & children. e.g. as a natural sweetener substitute.

Yes, Manuka honey tastes just as delicious as "normal" honey and is therefore also suitable for use as a sweetener. In warm milk, (iced) tea or as a spoonful in yoghurt, your morning will be a well-intentioned treat!

What makes Manuka honey so special is that the bees collect the nectar from the flowers of the Manuka plant (also known as South Sea myrtle) and process it into honey in the beehive. The manuka bush grows exclusively in New Zealand and can only be found there (it is still not known why this is the case). The higher the MGO content in Manuka honey, the greater the effect of the honey. Genuine Manuka honey comes 100% from New Zealand (from the beekeeper) and should also be certified accordingly. Our bedrop Manuka honey is certified with an MGO content of 400+ and is 100% from the best areas and beekeepers in New Zealand.

Methylglyoxal (MGO) is the fixed component of Manuka honey and can occur in varying levels. The higher the MGO content, the greater the effect. The bees collect the nectar from the Manuka bush, which contains the plant sugar dihydroxyacetone, not methylglyoxal. The bees convert the dihydroxyacetone to methylglyoxal (MGO) using their special digestive enzymes. It is important to note that the special active ingredients of Manuka honey only unfold from an MGO content of > 400. If the MGO content is less than 400, it is similar to normal blossom honey in most cases. According to laboratory analysis, Bedrop Manuka Honey has an MGO content of at least 400 and therefore contains the important active ingredients.

Manuka honey has a wide range of applications. As with any other honey, it can be used as a "normal" honey spread. It can be used as a sweetener for milk, tea or other drinks. It is important to ensure that the drink is not warmer than 70°C, otherwise the honey will lose its effect. In the case of tea, the honey should be stirred in after a brewing time of 5 minutes. Manuka honey can be taken internally for support.

Manuka honey can be consumed by anyone. There are no concerns for adults, children or animals. However, everything should be consumed in moderation and not in large quantities.

All honey should be stored in a dark place. We have filled our Manuka Honey MGO 400+ in a dark and light-protected jar so that it can protect the honey from light. In addition, the honey should be stored in the dark with the lid closed.

Honey must NOT be stored in the refrigerator, as honey can absorb water and become osmotic. This has negative effects such as poor quality and reduced shelf life of the Manuka honey.

Manuka honey can crystallize after a time, this speaks for the honey and shows the activity, it can be consumed and used without any concerns. If, on the contrary, the honey becomes very runny after a while, it has absorbed too much moisture and should no longer be consumed.

The high sugar content in honey serves as a natural preservative, which means that honey can be kept for many years. However, the active ingredients in the honey decrease with the expiry of the best-before date, so it is advisable to consume the honey within the specified best-before date.

Genuine Manuka honey must have been bottled and certified directly in New Zealand. When buying, look for the MGO (methylglyoxal) value or the UMF seal. At bedrop, you will only receive certified original Manuka honey whose purity and MGO content have been confirmed by independent laboratories.

To experience the full variety of flavors and the specialty of Manuka honey, we recommend that you take a moment. Instead of swallowing it quickly, you can consciously let the honey melt in your mouth for around 2 to 3 minutes. This slow savoring gives the valuable, natural ingredients enough time to come into contact with your mucous membranes before they make their way into your stomach.

In traditional use, honey is often valued because it leaves a pleasant feeling in the throat. Manuka honey covers the mucous membranes like a gentle protective film and can therefore contribute to a pleasant, soothing feeling.

Tip: Try our MANUKA MOUTH SPRAY as a throat spray - on its own or in a real Manuka set together with our bedrop MANUKA HONEY.

Note: Our recommendations and products are intended as a supplementary care routine - they do not replace medical treatment.
