Use of propolis for pollen allergies
A pollen allergy (also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis)is an allergic reaction to pollen from plants that are released during the pollen season. In Germany, every 5th adult and 20% of all children suffer from a pollen allergy. Due to environmental pollution, the number of people affected increases every year, both in childhood and adulthood.
Pollen allergy in medicine
Symptoms can include itching, runny nose, sneezing, eye irritation, headaches and skin rashes. Frequent blowing of the nose leads to dry and sensitive nostrils. For those affected, this is a very stressful and annoying allergy, as the symptoms persist for a long time. If the symptoms are very severe, it is not possible to socialize. This seasonal allergy affects not only adults, but also children. In medicine, medications such as antihistamines, nasal sprays and eye drops are used. The side effects of antihistamines can include drowsiness, concentration problems or gastrointestinal problems.Propolis and hay fever study
The correct treatment of pollen allergy, seasonal allergy rhinitis (hay fever), is of great importance so that the symptoms do not worsen and have no further consequences for those affected. It is important to know the status of the disease from specialized doctors, but alternative medicine, on the other hand, places great value on natural support, including propolis.
There have been several studies investigating the effectiveness of propolis in the treatment of pollen allergies. Some of these studies have shown that propolis can have an anti-inflammatory effect and reduce the release of histamine. This reduction can in turn contribute to a reduction in allergic symptoms. For example, a 2002 study found that propolis preparations led to significant improvements in allergic symptoms in patients with pollen allergy (hay fever). Another study "The effect of Iranian propolis on symptoms of allergic rhinitis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial" from 2013 by M. M. Salehi, M. Ghasemi, M. Naseri and R. S. Mosaddegh found that patients' symptoms showed an improvement in pollen allergy after only 4 weeks of treatment with propolis.
It is important to carry out a small allergy test on the palms of the hands before using propolis for the very first time. To do this, apply 1-2 drops to the palm of the hand and leave to soak in for approx. 30 minutes. If no allergic reaction occurs, propolis can be used as support for pollen allergies.
