Lipedema

Lipoedema is mainly found in women and is a special form of fatty tissue change. Unlike normal weight changes, a characteristic appearance develops here: the fatty tissue is distributed in a very specific way, especially on the legs and hips. Those affected often recognize this by the symmetrical shape of their legs, which is often described as "breeches" or "columnar legs". Particularly noticeable is the increased sensitivity to touch in the affected areas, and many women notice that bruises form more quickly.

What distinguishes lipoedema from normal weight gain: Neither a balanced diet nor regular exercise can influence these changes. Science is still puzzling over this, but some correlations are already emerging: lipoedema often occurs within families, which suggests a genetic component. The fact that it almost exclusively affects women also points to possible links: the first signs often appear during phases of life with hormonal changes - be it during puberty, pregnancy or the menopause.
