Propolis is a resin produced by bees which is used to seal beehives. Propolis is particularly rich in polyphenols & flavonoids.
What is propolis?
Alongside honey, pollen and royal jelly, propolis is one of the most important substances in the bee world. The worker bees collect the substance, which consists mainly of resin and wax, and bring it into the hive. The hive bees take the propolis from the worker bees and use it to insulate the hive, cement cracks and lay the propolis as a kind of doormat at the entrance to the hive. To keep the hive clean and sterile and to keep other insects and bacteria away, the bees not only narrow the entrance holes with the propolis, they also seal the entire hive with it. Only the bees can walk over the propolis with their sensitive legs without any problems, all other insects would get stuck in the sticky substance. The bees therefore use the propolis not only to protect themselves against foreign intruders, but above all as protection for the hive and the bee colony. Over 40,000 bees live in the hive in a very small space, which is 99.9% sterile.
